“enigma/becoming” is a composition that can literally be inverted – meaning the page itself is flipped upside down – to expand both its orchestration and the potential interrelationships of the material. To achieve this, the notation is reduced to essentially solid vertical lines (which represent sound attacks within a range of pitches on the open staff), dashed horizontal lines (which represent approximate durations of sounds and their relative frequency), and nested repeat zones. Depending on the orientation of the page, performers may read from either the “enigma” side or the “becoming” side, and an ensemble may perform both sides simultaneously. The three numbered lines on each side determine points of entry into the music, and can be used as performance cues.
The title is sort of a play on words, and can be read as enigma becoming or becoming enigma.
